What is Tumor?

Tumor is an abnormal mass of tissue which may be solid or fluid-filled. A tumor also known as a neoplasm and it does not mean cancer which is tumors can be benign (non-cancerous), pre-malignant (pre—cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Other than that, they are many different types of tumor and a variety of names for them which their names usually reflex their shape and the kind of tissue they appear in.

What is type of tumor?

There are three types of tumor such as benign tumor, pre-malignant and malignant:

Benign Tumor

Benign tumor cannot metastasize and cannot spread. Most of benign tumors are not harmful to human health. They are not cancerous and some may press against nerves or blood vessels and cause pain or other negative effects. Examples of benign tumor are:

    • Adenomas

Tumor that arise from glandular epithelial tissue which cover glands, organs and other structure in the body.

    • Fibroids

Benign tumor that grow on fibrous or connective tissue of any organ in the body.

Pre-Malignant Tumor

    • Actinic keratosis

Actinic keratosis also known as senile keratosis or solar keratosis is a premalignant growth consisting crusty, scaly and thick patches of skin. Fair-skinned people are more susceptible to these types of growths, especially those to expose to sunlight.

    • Leukoplakia

Thick, white patches form on the gums, bottom of the mouth, inside of the cheeks, and less commonly on the tongue. They cannot be scraped off easily. The main cause of this disease is tobacco smoking and or chewing is the main cause.

Malignant Tumor

Malignant tumors are cancerous tumor; they tend to become progressively worse, and can potentially result in death. Malignant tumors are ones grow fast.

    • Carcinoma

These tumors are derived from the skin or tissue that line body organs (epithelial cells). Carcinomas can be for examples of the stomach, prostate, pancreas, lung, liver, colon or breast.

    • Sarcoma

These are tumors that start off in connective tissue, such as cartilage, bones, fat and nerves. They originate in the mesenchymal cells outside the bone marrow.

What is naming of tumors and cancers?

Cancer words usually have a prefix (start of the word) which part of the body is involved while suffix (end of the word) tells what type of cancer it is.

What is a cause of tumor?

In general, tumors occur when cells divide and grow excessively in the body. Normally, cell growth and division is strictly controlled. Problems with the body’s immune system can lead to tumor to tumor. Tobacco causes more deaths from tumor than any other environmental substance. The causes include:

  • Benzene and other chemicals and toxins
  • Drinking too much alcohol
  • Genetic problems
  • Obesity
  • Radiation
  • Viruses
  • Excessive sunlight exposure
  • Environmental toxins, such as certain poisonous mushrooms and a type of poison that can grow on peanut plants.
